The True Spirit of Christmas: Peace, Love, and Transformation

When I think of Christmas, I imagine more than lights, gifts, and festive meals. I think of a story—a story of transformation, grace, and love. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of those tales that stays with you. It's not just about a miserly old man but about the journey we all face. And as I reflect on Ebenezer Scrooge’s awakening, I’m reminded of the deeper truths found in the Bible.

 

Scrooge’s transformation begins with an honest look at his past—where he let go of love and clung to greed. Isn’t it striking how similar this is to the Bible's call to return to our first love? Revelation 2:4 says, "You have forsaken your first love." It’s a quiet reminder that we all lose sight of what really matters sometimes.

 

Then comes the present, the heart of the story. Scrooge sees the struggles of those around him, like Bob Cratchit’s family and little Tiny Tim. They may lack material wealth, but their hearts are rich in love. Jesus reminds us of this in Matthew 25:40, "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." There’s something profoundly humbling about recognizing the joy in serving and giving.

 

Finally, Scrooge peers into the future—a future shaped by his choices. The Bible, too, speaks of this sobering truth: "It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). But what’s beautiful is the hope woven into both stories. We are not bound by our past or mistakes. In Christ, we find renewal. "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17).

 

Christmas is a season of hope—a time to realign with the peace of heaven and the love shared on earth. It calls us to open our hearts to transformation, just as Scrooge did. This season, may we let go of what weighs us down, embrace God’s love, and share that love with others. After all, isn’t that the true spirit of Christmas?
